ABOUT "AMERICAN POP CULTURE" PROJECT

ABOUT “AMERICAN POP CULTURE PROJECT” SPONSORED BY LITTLE BLACK DRESS

“Pop culture is the closest thing America has to a national faith. However different we are, most of us share a common knowledge about subjects as diverse as the Super Bowl, Bruce Springsteen, Cher’s tattooed rear end, Oprah’s weight problems, Star Trek, and the Woodstock festival.
A few generations ago, to learn about Donald Trump’s love life or Roseanne Arnold’s childhood sex traumas, you would have had to scour the lowliest
Gossip magazines; now, such subjects
are the stuff of respectable newspapers and prime-time television.
Once at the periphery of what seemed to matter, pop culture has become the drumbeat of everyday life. This is nothing less than a major realignment
Of American culture. Whether it makes you cry or clap your hands with joy, and whether you see it as dismally vulgar or the genuine expression of a robust democracy, pop culture cannot be ignored.
Pop culture is American culture.”
