RORY BLOCK - Mama's Blues (1991)
320
Rory Block is a white country blues stylist whose singing and guitar playing teem with honest empathy for past masters such as Bessie Smith, Tommy Johnson, and Robert Johnson. As an interpretive singer, however, she conveys little sense of the pained emotionality of her mentors-her inflections are noticeably secondhand-and only when she handles unexceptional originals does her character begin to emerge. This 1991 album mixes well-chosen covers with lively original i compositions. Rory's soulful vocals and evocative acoustic i guitar command attention throughout, both on their own (Robert i Johnson's "Terraplane Blues") and with accompaniment (Jerry i Marotta's drum punctuations and Jorma Kaukonen's melancholy i electric guitar moans on the title track). The disc ends on an i upbeat note with an original gospel song, "Sing Good News," i powered by piano, hand claps, and choir vocals.
