Patty Griffin already has reached the "Top of the World" as a songwriter. The Dixie Chicks covered that song and the biting "Truth No. 2," and soul giant Solomon Burke recorded her "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)," heard here in Griffin's own, deeply moving version. Griffin's vocals, however, at times seemed too wispy for her own good, a problem not found on the marvelous "Children Running Through." She imparts a gospel charge to the simply elegant "Heavenly Day" -- "Tomorrow may rain with sorrow/Here's a little time we can borrow" -- and a jolt of old (Stax/Volt) soul to "Stay on the Ride," another "Top"- notch portrait of an old soul.
