Additional personnel include: Rossington Collins Band, .38 Special, Johnny Van Zant Band. This 16-track compilation brings together an assortment of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most popular tracks and songs by various off-shoots of the band. The collection's first five songs are the rock behemoth's best known, with "Sweet Home Alabama," "Gimme Three Steps," and "Freebird" faithfully represented. The remainder of the set features work by .38 Special, Van Zant, and the Rossington Collins Band, among others. Each of these groups was like a smaller planet orbiting around the central sun of Skynyrd, and each proffers the same guitar-fueled Southern boogie rock. A nice mix of hits and lesser-known material, FAMILY is a fine introduction to a towering Southern rock dynasty.
