Does anybody feel a draft in here?

Friday, March 3, 2006 1:01 PM CST

One of my guilty pleasures is anticipating the NBA Draft every summer. Of course, the angle I'm most interested in is where the Utah Jazz will pick and who might be available for that pick.

Let me just say before I delve into this any further that, with Utah still in contention for a playoff spot, I would never be a proponent for playing for the draft lottery. The object for the Jazz year in and year out, as coach Jerry Sloan will tell you real fast, is to make the playoffs, as it should be for any NBA team.

But I must confess that there are two or three players available in this summer's draft that, should Utah fall short of the playoffs - or make the playoffs and trade up for a high pick - have me intrigued, even excited.

Top among these, in my view, is (currently slumping) J.J. Redick, who is currently burning up the nets for the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Allow me to digress for just a minute. Having grown up in North Carolina watching ACC basketball, I always like to see ACC guys make it to the NBA, and I especially like it when they join the Jazz. My favorite college team, N.C. State, produced Thurl Bailey, whom Utah picked No. 7 overall back in 1983. That was like Christmas and a birthday combined for me.

What's more, former Blue Devil Carlos Boozer and former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Matt Harpring are currently with the Jazz, which is also very cool from my standpoint. Anyway, back to the subject of this summer's draft.

From a scoring standpoint, I would have to project Redick to go in one of the top 14 selections this June. Through Monday, Redick is second in scoring in NCAA Division I with 785 total points and an average of 28 points per game. Only Gonzaga's Adam Morrison, at 28.8 points per game, has scored more points than Redick, and Morrison should go in one of the top three picks.

Redick has incredible touch and range in his shooting. His 3-point shooting percentage, with shots routinely taken from NBA depth, is 43.4 percent. Anybody who misses Jeff Hornacek ought to be in favor of this youngster in a Jazz uniform.

But Redick has about as many scouts who don't like him as do. They talk about his game being one-dimensional, that he lacks the size needed for an NBA shooting guard and that his defense is lacking. But Redick's steals numbers this season are the highest of his college career, and in the highly competitive ACC, that's saying something.

Also, though his rebounding is down this season, Redick has crashed the boards as a guard very well overall, grabbing 115 total rebounds during his sophomore season.

Now, mock drafts have to be taken with a grain of salt, because nobody really knows what will happen on Draft Night until it actually happens. But ESPN.com's Chad Ford has a mock draft engine for the 2006 Draft Lottery that projects 2,184 different scenarios. And most of those have Utah selecting Redick with the No. 14 overall pick.

Also somewhat intriguing is that Utah has three second-round picks this summer. While it's unlikely that three second-round picks would all make next season's roster, there are some interesting possibilities there, as well.

Among those expected to be avaliable in the second round are Dee Brown - Deron Williams' teammate at Illinois - shotblocking swingman Eric Hicks out of Cincinnati and powerful forwards like Gonzaga's J.P. Batista and George Washington's Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

But one or two of those picks could be used on international players who, a la Andrei Kirilenko, could be allowed to play overseas for a season or two to develop and join the Jazz at a later time. Among the possibilities is Bosnian Croat Damir Markota. A 6-10 forward, the 20-year-old Markota is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds(!?!) in Croatia's Upper Division. He definitely has upside, and with some seasoning he could be a good NBA player.

Also projected to be available this summer is 7-2 Serbian center Kosta Perovic. This 21-year-old has a nice touch with the basketball for a big man. He's a good shotblocker and rebounder, mainly because of his size, but he also has scoring ability out to mid range. Perovic is a good passer out of the block, and his work ethic is excellent. Again, given a little time, he could be a great post presence in the NBA.

There, hopefully that will get the draft out of my system, at least until May ... maybe.
