There is evidence that some illnesses such as anemia, Diamond-Blackfeet (Diamond Blackfan Anemia), may be caused, at least in some cases, errors in the assembly of ribosomes. A deeper understanding of how they are biogenesis, can show the way to remedy such errors and to prevent or treat these diseases.
On a more fundamental level, this successful project has proved the consistency of the developed at the Institute of Scripps methods and to use it for visualization and understanding of other complex and important cellular processes.
